Ready for the next 30 years.
These
pictures show the results of the modifications. The cost of the
modifications was approximately $15,500 for materials and supplies, the
majority of which was for cosmetic and maintenance issues rather than
aging-in-place specific requirements. Including labor, the remodel
likely would have cost about $35,000. We calculate the aging-in-place
related costs at approximately $3750, primarily for the following:
-
a
$1000 premium for the master bath shower and accessories over less
appropriate replacements.
-
$1750
for fixing the hallway, converting to pocket doors and widening
and ramping the garage entrance.
-
$1000
for electrical work and new lighting/switches
The
rest of the aging -in-place features were achieved at no incremental
cost over a normal remodel--it just required thoughtful design elements
and selection of fixtures. This shows how easy it is to incorporate
aging-in-place design elements into a cosmetic remodel in any home.
Our remodeled home gets a near perfect 98 score on our AAHA index.
The
house sold before being put back on the market--at a price that more
than covered the complete cost of the remodel.
The
new owners asked for some minor changes to our design--they added glass
shower doors rather than a curtain in the master bath and replaced the
bathroom pedestal sink with a vanity unit.
